introducing very exciting project

unthinkable creatures chapbook press!

——————————————————————-

I. ORIGIN STORY

the day after christmas i had breakfast and sat on a steep (for central florida at least) hill on a gray day with karen and we talked about technology, access, zines and riot grrl culture, mechanical reproduction, the internet. what kind of lacks and excesses did we feel, as suburban teenagers in the early 2000s? what kind of media do we want/need now?

II. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

the goal of unthinkable creatures is to create and distribute zines and chapbooks that acknowledge and talk back to the productive tensions and overlaps between electronic and handmade media, including but not limited to erasures, emails, text messages, and blog culture. every so often i will release a small edition (50-100) of a chabook/zine— which will be hand-bound and -numbered and available via (probably) etsy store, for the low, low price of something like five dollars.

III. LIST OF RHETORICAL QUESTIONS

is technology “clean” or “dirty”? does it have a temperature? what does excess look like online? in real time? what are the role of glitter, rubber cement, pipe cleaners and pompoms in postmodernity? in experimental writing? does digitizing something necessarily make it streamlined or efficient? what are the poetics of a text you can’t touch? how is font emotional? how does a text message mutate when you write it longhand in your diary?

VI. ETC.

the first title is in the works now and should be available sometime in february.

contact me if you have a chapbook-length manuscript (10-25 pages) you would like to submit.
